OpenAI and MediaTek join forces for AI Smartphone project, threatening Qualcomm's dominance!
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that a potential partnership between OpenAI and MediaTek would have a profound impact on Qualcomm's smartphone business, AI chip development, and future 6G positioning. OpenAI and MediaTek have joined forces for an AI smartphone project.
Something big is about to happen, recently analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shared new information about the alleged partnership between OpenAI and MediaTek and claimed that this collaboration could have a long-term impact on MediaTek's smartphone business, AI chip development and future 6G positioning.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared a post on X suggesting that the OpenAI smartphone project could provide MediaTek with a rare branding opportunity that could help bridge the premium perception gap with Qualcomm.
According to the analyst, Qualcomm has spent years building Snapdragon's premium image through sponsorships and flagship Android partnerships, which has helped it gain a strong market perception in the high-end smartphone segment.
MediaTek will benefit
Kuo believes that this partnership will not immediately boost MediaTek's stock price, but it could improve the company's long-term smartphone business outlook and strengthen investor confidence.
Kuo said that with ChatGPT's rapidly growing popularity, OpenAI could now gain significant popularity in the smartphone segment. He estimated that, combined with ChatGPT's user base, media coverage, and social amplification, the OpenAI smartphone launch event could reach an audience of 300 million to 500 million.
The analyst also explained how AI agent smartphones could change the design priorities for future smartphone processors. He said that AI-focused devices will require chips that can handle continuous inference,
memory updates, low-latency processing, and always-on sensing. According to Kuo, the OpenAI partnership could help MediaTek gather real-world data to design future AI-centric system-on-chips.
What did the analyst say about 6G Development?
Another topic discussed in the post is 6G development. Kuo suggested that AI-native devices will play a major role in shaping future 6G standards,
particularly in areas like persistent connectivity and cloud-device AI processing. He added that MediaTek could have a greater influence on future 6G standard setting through its experience with the OpenAI smartphone project.
